Fic: Vulnerable

Title: Vulnerable
Rating: mild R
Pairing: Sylar/Luke
Word Count: ~700
Summary: a look at Sylar's time with Luke

Luke states it as fact.

“She hates me.”

Sylar knows. He can see it in the mother's eyes, and the way she has to force out the words of denial.

He's intrigued by the kid. Sylar can see a lot of himself in Luke. Or, what he once was when he was still Gabriel. Having the ability to kill while still possessing the kindness to refrain. Stuck with a mother who doesn't understand.

When Sylar leaves, Luke begs him to take him along.

“You're the only one who understands what it's like.”

Sylar finds himself unable to say no.

They travel from motel to motel. Dirty rooms, twin beds, broken air conditioners.

Sylar never falls asleep first. His eyes remain open until he hears Luke's soft breathing.

He always makes sure he is awake and dressed before Luke stirs.

He hates being vulnerable.

“He sold you for money, you know”

Sylar's expression darkens. He knew he'd been abandoned, but he hadn't expected that. He feels anger brewing within him, but it's mixed with something else. Something resembling sadness.. and shame.

As they sit down to eat, Sylar rolls his eyes as Luke blows bubbles into his milkshake. Goddamn fucking kid. Yet, Sylar finds himself wanting to talk to Luke. The kid asks questions so openly and he seems to want to learn. No one's ever asked Sylar how or why before. What are his patterns, his motives.. What does he want?

He opens up to Luke. Tells him things he doesn't share with anyone.

Sylar can't make sense of it, and for once he doesn't try.

They cut it too close. They'd been careless, made themselves too obvious.

“I didn't come back for you, I came back for this. You just happened to be there”

“Still, you could've just left me”

Luke's right. Sylar could've just left him. He's not sure why he didn't. Something gnaws at him from deep inside. He tries to ignore it, not wanting to acknowledge any sort of positive feeling he might have towards the kid.

Feeling Luke's eyes on him, Sylar turns on the radio and keep driving.

That night he fucks Luke up against the wall in their motel room.

They're together only three more days. The pattern is the same. Drive, eat, drive, check into a motel, fuck against the wall. Sylar says nothing, save for a few grunts; while Luke is a mess of sighs and moans, with words and unfinished sentences pouring from his mouth.

On their last night, Sylar swears he hears the kid say 'I love you' but he tunes it out and thrusts harder.

He doesn't want to talk about love. What the hell could this kid know about it anyway?

As he drifts back into reality he feels himself cringe. The kid had just seen him at his most vulnerable.

The sex didn't count, because being naked with Luke didn't mean he was vulnerable. Sylar could fuck the kid without involving emotions. At least, that's what he kept telling himself.

Today, right now, it's completely different. He just called out for his mommy. Luke attempts to make light of the situation, and Sylar feels rage well up inside of him as he throws the kid against the wall.

Pinned, Luke stares at him with fear, begging for an explanation.

Sylar needs to make this fucking kid understand. They are the same, but Luke can't see it. He's been there – confused, scared, misunderstood. The feeling was there when he was Gabriel, and elements of it are still within him now. It never goes away, and it never gets easier.

“There is no escape. There is only pain.”

He can see the kid brace himself, clearly expecting to be killed. Of course.. Why shouldn't he kill Luke? The fucking kid had said it himself, Sylar was a serial killer. And he'd killed everyone who had meant anything to him.

“Go home to your mother, Luke.”

Sylar exits the diner without a second glance.

Emotions made him sloppy. Clearly he was better off on his own.

nice one ladycakes!

Sylar's lucky, if i had've been Luke i would've laughed in his face when he says 'mommy'... pretty much just as i did when i watched the episode... and then i would've been murdered. whatever.

Wow, I loved the exploration of Sylar having vulnerability issues. It makes a lot of sense considering his character and I can see how he would not want to develop a strong attachment to anyone.
